ASEAN Economic Community Chartbook 2012 (Jan 2013)
Published by ASEAN Secretariat, this official publication presents a graphical overview of selected macroeconomic indicators in ASEAN relative to its trading partners. It includes more than 50 charts describing key macroeconomic trends, including economic growth, trade, investment and other indicators of economic integration. Download the report here.
Impact of the ASEAN Economic Community on ASEAN Production Networks (Feb 2013). Published by Asian Development Bank Institute, this report by Kornkarun Cheewatrakoolpong, Chayodom Sabhasri and Nath Bunditwattanawong suggests that the emergence of international production networks in East Asia / ASEAN results from market-driven forces such as vertical specialisation and higher production costs in the home countries and institutional-led reasons such as free trade agreements. It examines two industries, autos and auto parts, and hard disk drives (HDDs), to understand international production networks. It concludes that investment promotion policies contributed more to the emergence of international production networks than free trade agreements. Download the report here.
Beyond market access - the anatomy of ASEAN’s preferential trade agreements (2013) Published by European University Institute, this study by David Kleimann seeks to enhance the understanding of ASEAN’s external preferential trade agreements (PTA) in context of the recent growth of economic regionalism in East Asia. First it compares the content of ASEAN’s plurilateral PTAs with China, Korea, Japan, India, Australia and New Zealand with the status quo of ASEAN’s internal economic integration. Secondly, it compares ASEAN’s plurilateral agreements and ASEAN’s internal integration with the content of six bilateral PTAs that individual ASEAN member states have concluded with Japan.
