Gulf and ASEAN "exploring the possibility of negotiation" for FTA

The first meeting of the Joint Work Team for Economic and Trade Cooperation between Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) has concluded in Salalah, Oman.

Officials highlighted the importance of enhancing the cooperation in the field of trade and investment and "exploring the possibility of negotiation regarding the Free Trade Agreement between the two regions" within this context, the ONA reported.

The meeting stressed the importance of facilitating trade and investment opportunities for the private sector and encouraging active participation in a number of fields that include organising a symposium on the future of economic cooperation between the GCC and ASEAN member countries due to be held on the sidelines of the 3rd joint ministerial meeting scheduled for Abu Dhabi in October 2011.
